Bring Children Back To School

“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela

Vulnerable Children Need Education

Liberia is a small country on the west coast of Africa with a population of approximately 4.5 million. It is similar in size to the U.S. state of Tennessee. The country was embroiled in a 14-year civil war that decimated the country. Infrastructure, including school buildings, were destroyed. A whole generation of children were left uneducated. The 2014 Ebola outbreak caused the few schools operating to close; setting students back even further. In addition to suffering the ravages of war, the population experience severe poverty. According to the World Bank, “Poverty in Liberia remains a considerable challenge, with approximately 70 percent of the population living on less than $1.90 per day. The incidence of poverty in Liberia is 20 percentage points higher than most other developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa…. There is a significant shortfall in available classroom infrastructure.” Many families cannot afford to pay the minimal fee to send their children to school. The school-age children just sit around, doing nothing during the day and entertain themselves on the street.

The children playing are the lucky ones. Because, many of their friends are forced to earn income for their families. These children can be seen on Liberia’s streets selling commodities. Even more heartbreaking are the children who are forced to work, breaking rocks into pebbles to be sold for little or nothing. Or cutting trees and branches to sell. These children work all day, many times without being fed.

“A child without education is like a bird without wings” – Tibetan proverb

To help the children, change their lives and give them a fighting chance to have a decent childhood, the Watta Mento School of Excellence(School) was developed in 2017. The School is doing a great job taking children off the streets. TGER selected this School as one of its projects. TGER's goal is to assist the School financially and supply the School with needed equipment, materials, supplies and uniforms. Specific challenges of the School are highlighted in the articles on our website.

Please join us in uplifting this school. Join TGER to support this school – together we can change the world.

The Watta Mento School of Excellence

“Improving the world by enriching its children”

To address the dire need for schools, the Watta Mento School (School) was developed. The School is the brainchild of Jibba Kanneh and has been in the making for over 10 years. The founder, Jibba Kanneh, lived through the Liberian civil war, witnessing firsthand the ravages of war and subsequent impoverishment of the Liberian children. The majority of the population is less than 20 years old, uneducated, unskilled and unemployed. They have children and cannot afford to pay for their education, therefore, the children roam the streets, hungry and uneducated. Jibba wanted to make a difference and stop the cycle of poverty. He knew that educating the children and their parents would have the greatest impact. Therefore, he started to build a 30-room school. He utilized his own savings and labor from the community to build the first floor of the School. He hired a certified principal and ten teachers, paying them mainly from his savings and fees a few families are able to pay. It continues to be a financial struggle to complete and operate the School, but his passion about vulnerable children keeps him motivated and energized.
